Pakistan does not only
contribute in modern world with its agriculture and industry exports but also
with finest minds to play part in leading researches and innovations. Our three
scientists are working in world’s largest experiment of CERN, our Shamshad
Akhtar is working as an undersecretary general in UN and we have bright faces
like Nergis Mavalvala and Sharmeen Obaid Chinoy. Nargis Mavalvala and Imran Khan
has recently praised for their working as a team member of team that discovered
gravitational waves.

Now, we have great news, former
chairman of Higher Education Commission has been appointed as the chairman of
United Nations committee on Science, Technology and Innovation (STI). Some days
ago, he chaired his first meeting and discussed the challenges.
The first meeting was organized
by UN Economic Social Commission for Asia and Pacific (ESCAP). The theme of the
meeting was Harnessing science, technology and innovation for sustainable socio
economic Development. The participants discussed
various elements that are affecting science, technology and innovation. Various
advices came into agenda for discussion. Dr Atta ur Rehman in his speech said
that UNGA adopted the most ambitious and detailed program for upcoming 15 years
with the name “agenda 2030”. He added that these efforts will improve welfare
of people around the world.
The UN committee for the
implementation of this agenda is co chaired by Dr. Atta ur Rehman and Tan Sri
Zakri, who is a advisor to Malaysian PM for Science and Technology.
Dr Atta ur Rehman is receiving greetings
from all over the world especially from scientist community for his
appointment.
Dr. Atta received his master’s
degree in chemistry from University of Karachi and went to England for higher studies;
there he got his Ph. D degree in organic chemistry from university of
Cambridge. He has remained one of the leading scientists in chemistry in his
time. He came to Pakistan to serve his country. In Pervez Mushraf era, he was
appointed as Minister of science and technology, the post he served from
2000-2002. He started working on the idea of reshaping higher education in
Pakistan and in 2002, HEC established. HEC sent thousands of teachers and
students to foreign universities for the specializations in their respective
fields. Many new universities came into existence and research grants were
issued. The universities received special funding for research and individual
funding was also given to persons with credible background with science and
technology to promote culture of science and technology.

He received several honors for
his contribution on national and international level. Pakistan gave four
highest civilian awards to him; Nishan-e-Imtiaz (2002), Hilal-e-Imtiaz (1998),
Sitara-e-Imtiaz (1993) and Tamgha-e-Imtiaz (1983). He has 900 research publications
on his credit in organic chemistry and his finest achievement is that he also
holds 28 patents on his name.
This is really honor for
Pakistan and will enlighten the name of country. This shows that people of
Pakistan has enormous potential, if they given timely opportunities. Pakistan
should also call him for services again in education sector as we have not gained
what we should have achieved.
