There are thousands of universities all over the world and many developing countries are now a day’s investing on their higher education system to compete with modern world.
There is no single ranking system for universities. Many ranking system are working which publish their ranking annually. The ranking includes many factors e.g. research, market output and faculty.
Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) is one the most credible system; it is actually a British ranking agency that is doing the ranking system from last many years.
This year in March, QS issued its ranking and this time the list of world 800 best universities. Six Pakistani universities have secured their place in top “800” list. The universities those are included in the list are Quaid e Azam university Islamabad, National University of Science and Technology Islamabad, Lahore University of Management Sciences Lahore, University of Karachi, University of Lahore and University of engineering and technology Lahore.
NUST Islamabad raked in 501-550 section, QAU in 651-700 and remaining in 700 + category. While just in engineering universities NUST is ranked at 340. Quaid e Azam has been ranked 1st by the list of higher education commission Pakistan ranking 2015. However, the 15 Indian universities secure place in list.
QS Ranking has used following formula for developing the ranking; academic reputation (40%), citations per faculty (20%), international faculty ratio (5 %), students to faculty ratio (20%), employer reputation (10%) and international students (5 %).
The universities must be praised for their efforts for achieving academic excellence. If we look back into some years, Pakistan was never placed in any higher education ranking. This is actually the fruit of the tree whose seed was ploughed with the inception of higher education commission, nearly 15 years ago. The regular funding for infrastructure and for research helped the universities to compete with modern world. We should not rely on this achievement, they way is too far, till now. We have many universities and govt. is giving them proper economic benefits, the result should be much more. The market-university relationship is still not developed in Pakistan and abilities of university graduates are not match able with international standards.
