Pakistan and MIT Collaboration in Science & Technology Sector


The higher education sector of Pakistan is expanding at a very fast speed and nearly half million students are now enrolled in higher education institutions all over the country. The ratio was far below some years before but the indulgence of private sector in higher education raised the figure to much higher level. The increasing trend of higher education also raises concerns about the quality of education and many time the irregularities in private sector and unfair admission speculated in media. The Govt. is aware with the fact but never in recent past, has any step been taken to ensure the quality factor.

Federal Minister Planning, Development and Reform Ahsan Iqbal is on the tour of USA these days, there he held meetings with the leading figures at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and discussed with them the collaboration with the Institutes in science and technology field including setting up a state of art university in Pakistan.
During his tour at MIT, He met with quantum astrophysicist Nergis Mavalvala, Associate Department Head of Physics at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).
Mavalvala is a member of the team of scientists who discovered the gravitational waves that were hypothesized by famous scientist Albert Einstein, many decades ago. She was widely praised in Pakistani media and on social forums.
Ahsan Iqbal congratulated her on success and discussed opportunities for common work and for collaboration with MIT in the field of Science and Technology of the country. Research trend and quality in Pakistan is much lower than at the international institutions, if any kind of collaboration can be started , this will not only help in quality stuff of research journals but will provide our students many opportunities to worked with international researchers and renowned institutions like CERN.
One of the meetings of Ahsan Iqbal was with Bill Aulet, Managing Director of the Martin Trust Center for MIT Entrepreneurship at MIT in Boston. This global center is responsible for entrepreneurship in all schools at MIT. Both eminent figures discussed ideas to promote entrepreneurship in Pakistani universities so that our youth become job givers not job seekers.
One of the meetings was with Prof. Richard Lester, Associate Provost of Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Boston. Mr. Iqbal is working on the idea of establishing State Of The Art University in Pakistan; he discussed his plans with Prof. Richard and asked for the technical help. Well, instead of setting up a new university the badly needed changing in the curriculum and faculty will be much better.

The educational tour was not only confined to MIT but the Minister also met with Pakistani students at Kennedy School, Harvard University. The meeting was however in regard of present condition of Pakistan and students asked about the current Govt. and their stance and performance on various fronts.
Nearly 74 universities are currently in HEC recognized list but neither of them is ranked in top 100 of world best institution in any ranking.
