Pakistan Institute of Fashion and Design which is commonly known as PIFD is established as a specialist design institute catering to the demands of industry. Its basic vision is to provide a comprehensive design education which focuses on the relationship between the designed product and the consumer. It also aims to be the platform from which individuals can pursue challenging career options in the field of design. It offers a full time four years courses leading to Bachelors degree.

In 1994 Trade development authority of Pakistan in collaboration with Government of Pakistan and Mr. Olivier Lapidus worked on the plan as a result the establishment of Pakistan School of Fashion and Design happened under section 42 of companies ordinance 1984 in 2008. It was sponsored by Ministry of Commerce and Government of Pakistan. The status of Degree awarding institute was given by Higher Education Commission of Pakistan (HEC) back in 2010 whereas the NOC for degree awarding was granted in 2007.
Institute offer a 4 years degree program in bachelors of arts. There are four schools with different fields of specialization. Pakistan School of Fashion Design, Pakistan School of Fashion Marketing and Promotions, Pakistan School of Textile Design,Pakistan School of Accessories and Products. School of Accessories and Products offers some majors like Gems & Jewellery, Furniture Design & Manufacturing and Leather Accessories & Footwear.
In short period of time this superior designing school has managed to develop a lot of linkages and collaborations at national and international level. The institute is affiliated with the Ecole de la Chambre Syndicale de la Couture Parisienne for Fashion Design, with the Mod' Spe' Paris for Fashion Marketing and Promotions, with the Swedish College of Textile & Science in Borås, Sweden since 2007 for student exchange and curriculum development; and with the Asian Institute of Gemological Sciences, Thailand for the Gems and Jewelry program. These are the major international linkages of PIFD.
Local collaborations and partnerships include Ministry of Commerce, Ministry of Industries, Ministry of Textile, SMEDA , PIDC, AHAN , Pakistan Gems & Jewelry Development Company (PGJDC), Pakistan Fashion Design Council (PFDC), Fashion Pakistan, Footwear Association, Furniture Pakistan, Pakistan Leather Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (PLGMEA), Pakistan Gloves Manufacturing Association, Ready Made Garment Association, USAID, GTZ , and Pakistan Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (PCSIR ).
Pakistan institute of Fashion and Design has taken an initiative to affiliate colleges in six big cities of country in 2011. The project was executed with the collaboration from the Trade Development Authority of Pakistan. The different cities cater with various fields like Islamabad College offers Fashion Design and Gems and Jewelry studies Faisalabad College offers Fashion Design, and Textile Design, Peshawar College offers Gems and Jewelry, and Furniture, Multan College offers Textile Design, and Ceramics, Quetta College offers Gems and Jewelry, and Furniture Design Hala College offers Ceramics

PIFD has best employment ration of 100 %. The people from the Institute are delivering at international level. Many of them are doing work with multinational organization. Some are teaching in Dubai, Cairo and Shanghai fashion schools and in industry as creative directors.
