National University of Science and Technology known as NUST was established in March 1991. The basic motive for the establishment of this institute was to promote higher education in scientific education in Islamic Republic of Pakistan, especially in the field of science and technology, by providing a well managed academic environment together with a need based research for industrial growth.

In 1948, Military college of signals was established at Sialkot. In 1951, Military College of Engineering was given status of college and was shifted to Risalpur. On 1 April 1957, College of Electrical and Mechanical Engineering (CEME) was established at Quetta as EME School and a few years later in 1962 PNEC was established in Karachi. Gradually other institutes are offering courses such as medicine, aeronautical engineering and other engineering programs. NUST was established in 1991 by merging together military and civil educational resources. The university was given charter in 1993.
From the beginning university has expanded in scope, services and has emerged as one of the most developed & comprehensive public sector university. Over the years university has gained and achieved a lot as an institution. University has produced professionals and researchers of superior capabilities. NUST is currently ranked 417th in the world by QS, UK. In subject-wise ranking, NUST is rated among the top 300 universities in Engineering & IT (250th).NUST is also ranked 108th in Asia by QS, UK. According to fields NUST is rated among the top 100 Asian universities. According to field and discipline division this prestigious institute is at 53rd in Engineering & IT, 87th Life Sciences and Medicine, 79th in Arts and Humanities, 82nd in Natural Sciences and 67th in Social & Management Sciences – 67th
A lot of Undergraduate and Post graduate programs are offered in different faculties at NUST. NUST has established campuses in Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Risalpur and Karachi. Major faculties include Engineering, IT and Computer Science, Business Studies, Social & Natural Sciences and Architecture, Medicine and Applied Bio-sciences.
School of Civil and Environmental Engineering (SCEE), School of Chemicals and Materials Engineering (SCME), School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (SEECS), School of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering (SMME), College of Aeronautical Engineering (CAE), College of Electrical and Mechanical Engineering (CEME), Military College of Engineering (MCE), Military College of Signals (MCS), Pakistan Navy Engineering College (PNEC), BE Industrial and Manufacturing, NUST Institute of Peace and Conflict Studies (NIPCONS) are the schools under the faculty of Engineering, IT and Computer Science.
NUST Business School (NBS), Center for Advanced Mathematics and Physics (CAMP), School of Art, Design and Architecture (SADA) are governed by Business Studies, Social & Natural Sciences and Architecture.
Faculty of Medicine and Applied Bio-sciences has two schools known as Atta-ur-Rehman School of Applied Bio-sciences (ASAB), Army Medical College (AMC).
NUST has developed very strong collaborations and links with international universities to ensure two-way flow of knowledge. Major universities linked with NUST include Stanford University, Iowa State University, University of Michigan, University of Central Florida, University of North Carolina at Charlotte, CALTECH, Cranfield University, University of Manchester, University of West England, University of Southampton, University of Surrey, Charles Darwin University, University of Melbourne, University of New South Wales, University of Queensland, Beijing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Nanjing University, and Beijing Institute of Technology. Universities from Japan (AGU, Tokyo Institute of Technology), Denmark (DTU), Germany and France are also part of NUST international collaboration.
NUST has collaborations with universities in various fields. Specially in the field of medical sciences institute collaborate and work with Harvard University Medical School, New York Medical College, Virginia Cancer Institute, King's College London (University of London), Queen Mary, University of London, Imperial College London, University of New South Wales, University of Sydney, University of Queensland, Edith Cowan University, and University of Dublin.
The prestigious university offers a lot of opportunities to take part in co-curricular and extracurricular activities. There are a lot of student bodies like Volunteer Club, NUST Science Society, NUST Adventure Club, Literary Circle, Book Club, Fine Arts Club, Innovation and Entrepreneurship Society, Media Club, Bazm-e-Pakistan, Innovation Society, Debating Society, Aero-modelling Club, Environment Society, Telecom Society, Software Society, IT Club, Automobile Club and Sports Club. These bodies are student run societies which groom student’s leadership and interpersonal skills.
Every campus is well equipped with all major sports facilities. There are indoor and outdoor sports facilities such as badminton, table tennis, hockey, cricket, Tennis, basketball, volleyball, football and cricket in almost every campus. Some colleges have swimming pools and gymnasiums as well along with other sports.
